Gilbert & George

Gilbert was born in the Dolomites in Italy and studied at the School of Art Wolkenstein, School of Art and hallaina at the Art Academy of Munich, George was born in Devon and studied at the Dartington Adult Education Center, Hall Dartington College of Art and the Oxford School Art. They found each other as students at St. Martin's School of Art and have worked together since then, appearing as a single entity.
Gilbert & George radically changed the concept of sculpture. Earlier in his career, his job was to present themselves to themselves as sculptures, "living sculptures", and everything that made possible as a work of art. One of the best known of these works were Our New Sculture, 1969, whose name was later changed to "Underneath the Arches. In this video, in an attitude of "singing sculptures," Gilbert & George have met with a soundtrack composed a song before the war made famous by the duo Flanagan and Allan. Since then, they have been using a variety of languages, from design to photography through the painting. Gradually, the picture has become central to his activity, used in panels of several elements that have the theme of your life. Since the eighties the panels have gained large dimensions and have been given a uniform structure in a grid. Color gains a growing importance, being used in a symbolic way as in stained glass. In Cock Door in 1991, it is visible upfront but simultaneously humorous way as the artists treat the more complex themes.
